YES is designed for students in the middle school years, approximately 11-14 years of age. Some YES programs are provided by school systems, while others are implemented by non-profit or faith-based organizations.
YES program leaders are generally trained youth workers or teachers who have experience working with young people. YES programs also recruit and train local adult volunteers to assist and mentor YES participants as they complete their community projects.
In order to carry out a successful YES project, you will need a consistent physical location where students can meet, the ability to recruit 10-20 youth per group, a trained group leader and an assistant, access to community volunteers, and a budget for curriculum activities and community improvement project materials.
We offer training to prepare organizations to implement YES. The eight-hour interactive training prepares group leaders to implement the YES curriculum and to incorporate empowerment principles in their teaching approach. We also offer consultation for organizations that are considering YES.
If you have any questions about YES or are interested in implementing a YES program in your community, please feel free to contact us.
